Working With 5 Wire Rope Light

In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a connector for multi-color rope light so that it can be used with a computerized controller.  You can see these lights in action on the roofline in my 2006 videos and pictures.

First, Don't be an idiot.  You're working with electricity, so keep it safe.  Follow the directions carefully and read them through before you start the project.  I will not be held responsible for any injuries or property damage, so if you have any questions, send them to info@paradisechristmas.com.  Now to the project.

You will need:
5 wire rope light
Lamp cord or other wire at your desired length
Some really thin wire (like 22 gauge)
4 male plugs
Ziploc bags
Zip ties
Rope light Power cord (already included with the package from action)
Rope Power connector if power cord is female (also already included)
One of these (it is important to have the 8 position version)
EDIT: Add electrical tape

Instructions (sorry no pictures, but drawings):
First, cut the male plug off the power cord.  You will notice 5 small wires inside.
Next, carfully strip back the plastic about 1 1/2 inches.  Now, strip each of the wires about 1 cm or so.
Put that aside.

Next, take your thin wire and cut about 3 inches of it.  Strip the entire wire.
Now, run that wire through four screws on the terminal block so that the wire makes contact with those and only those 4.  Example:

Next, we'll wire up the rope connector to the terminals.  The power cords should have 5 wires inside (black, brown, white, blue, and purple I think)
Wire the black to one of the terminals that are connected together with the stripeed wire.
Now, wire the rest of the cables up to the blank screws on that side of the card.

Example:

Now, measure out the cords you will be using to place between the terminal block and the LOR box.  You should have 4 in total if using 2 conductor cord.  When you've figured that out, put the male plugs on the end of each, following the directions that came with the plug.  (some want you to strip the wire, others don't)  Strip the other end of each cable about 1 cm or so.  Now, screw one of the wires into the "common" side of the terminal, the other in one of the "blanks."

Example:

Repeat for the other three wires.

Example:

Now, I would zip tie all the way down the long cored to prevent tangling, but that's up to you.  Cover the terminal block with 2 ziplocs for weatherproofing.  Put a zip tie around the ziploc to keep the water out and the ziploc on.  (There are definitely better waterproofing methods than ziplocs, but my connection is under a roof eave so it doesn't seem to be a problem.)  I would create a "loop" with zip ties near the terminals to keep tension off the block.  This is what the cord should look like by now (plus zip ties and ziploc):

Alright, now for the testing.  Just for safety, I would cut off a piece of rope to the first cut line (3 feet on crown rope light).  Insert the pins into the socket, and plug each in individually and then all at the same time.  This will make sure you don't short anything.  Keep it running for a few minutes and watch for smoke.  If it all works, connect the rig to your big roll.  Test again, and if it all works, tighten the screw connectors then use electric tape over those.  You're done!  Enjoy!
